Charlie Sheen to Star in 'Anger Management' Sitcom

Charlie Sheen to Star in 'Anger Management' Sitcom

It's official: Charlie Sheen is going into Anger Management. Lionsgate and distributor Debmar-Mercury formally announced today that they've inked a deal with the former Two and a Half Men star for a new sitcom, which -- as we told you earlier this month -- will be based on the 2003 Adam Sandler comedy Anger Management.

In a press release, the 45-year-old actor explains why he picked this particular show. (That is, assuming he actually had a choice of projects following his insane media meltdown. But we'll give him the benefit of the doubt here.)

"I chose Anger Management because, while it might be a big stretch for me to play a guy with serious anger management issues, I think it is a great concept," says Sheen. (Is that sarcasm? We can't tell anymore.)

"It also provides me with real ownership in the series, a certain amount of creative control and the chance to be back in business with one of my favorite movie producers of all time, Joe Roth," continues Sheen.

Yes, if you're wondering who would hire Sheen after his unceremonious firing from Two and Half Men, that would be Joe Roth. The producer behind the film Anger Management, Roth worked with Sheen on five movies earlier in his career, including  Major League, Young Guns and Three Musketeers. And it appears he has nothing but enthusiasm for his old pal.

"With Charlie's incredible talent and comedic gifts, he remains the leading man of TV sitcoms," says Roth in the press release. "I'm excited to collaborate with him once again."

Earlier reports revealed that Sheen would be playing the Jack Nicholson role of deranged anger management counselor, rather than the Adam Sandler role of mild-mannered patient. The press release didn't unveil any new details, and the series is still in search of a show runner, a premiere date and -- yes -- a network willing to air it.

Until the show has an official home and premiere date, we can continue to be entertained by Sheen's real life: Today, he tweeted that he was thinking about joining the Navy SEALs. He was in the 1990 movie Navy SEALs -- so you know he's totally got what it takes!
