NBC's New Year Lineup

NBC's New Year Lineup

Are you a fan of NBC's Parenthood? Do you always make time for 30 Rock? Then you're going to want to read this: Starting in January, the network is moving several of its hit series around the scheduling grid. Of course, wherever your favorite shows land, your DVR will track them down. But if you prefer the old school approach to TV viewing -- watching a show when it's actually on -- then you may need to adjust your own couch time.

The schedule for the new year changes up the Thursday night lineup and stretches it to three hours (from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.). When it all unfolds, 30 Rock will end up at 10 p.m., with a brand new show, Perfect Couples (more on that later), in its old 8:30 time slot. Parenthood is remaining at 10 p.m. -- but switching to Monday nights. Law & Order: SVU, Law & Order: Los Angeles and Chase are also moving around on the schedule.

And there are some semi-promising new shows, too: The Cape (Mondays, 9 p.m.) is a thriller about a cop/superhero (David Lyons); Harry's Law (Mondays, 10 p.m.) is a quirky legal drama with a loopy lead lawyer (Kathy Bates); and Perfect Couples (Thursdays, 8:30 p.m.) is a romantic comedy about three… you guessed it, young couples.

Networks get complaints when they move shows around, but lots of this shuffling makes sense. The three-hour comedy block on Thursday is a novel approach to the dilemma of fitting great shows into their "must-see" TV night. Every show wants a Thursday night slot; now there's more room to give it to them. As for the other switches, shows like Law & Order and Parenthood tend to have loyal viewers, or at least ones with a DVR. Chances are, moving timeslots won't hurt a bit.
