Watch the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards With Your Kids

Watch the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards With Your Kids

The idea of watching the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards with your children on April 2 might seem as appealing as getting slimed on date night, but knowing how thrilled your kids would be if you showed some interest, here are five ideas to help motivate you.

Pretty Peas
If the Black Eyed Peas got your attention during the Super Bowl, they can do the same at the Kids' Choice Awards. After all, it's not like they'll be covering Raffi songs. They're performing -- no surprise -- a medley of their greatest hits, which begs the question: Does "I Got a Feeling" ever get old?

Back to Black
Expect Jack Black -- making his third appearance as KCA Host -- to be pretty funny, even for the grownup crowd. That's just what he does. But Black's not the only star with adult appeal who's dropping by. You'll also see Katy Perry, Robert Downey, Jr., Will Ferrell, Steve Carell and Cameron Diaz, among others.

Best Books
Sure, there are categories like "Favorite Buttkicker" (I hear Iron Man's a lock), but there's also categories like "Best Book." Well, there's one anyway, and it's indeed "Best Book," though it really should be "Best Book Series." The nominees are the Diary of Wimpy Kid series, the Dork Diaries series, the Vampire Academy series, and the Witch and Wizard series. Use this category to explore what kinds of books your kids like. Any conversation about books is a conversation worth having, because it means there's a library visit worth taking.

You Know Some of These Nominees
Yes, you do! Check out some of the superstar nominees your kids are voting for (or against): American Idol, Johnny Depp, Ashley Judd, Tom Hanks, Lady Antebellum, Train, Jay-Z, Bruno Mars, Taylor Swift and the icon of family values, Snoop Dogg.

Nice to Know You
Don't know a Victoria Justice from a Selena Gomez? Don't be intimidated or resort to cynicism -- just catch up on what you've been missing! Your kids will be shocked by how much you know, and you may develop some favorites of your own (I'm all about iCarly, for the record). Quick tip: Big Time Rush is a band both on TV and in real life -- not a brand of chewing gum, a football play, or a spinoff of A&E’s Intervention.

To be fair, some parts of the Kids' Choice Awards will be absolutely NSFG (Not Safe For Grownups), and not just the ones involving Justin Bieber. But consider it a research project -- with your own kids as the subject. The more you know about their world, the less they can accuse you of being "out of it."
