While Charlie Sheen was allegedly naked, drunk and trashing his hotel room on Tuesday night, his ex-wife Denise Richards was in the same hotel with their two daughters, Sammy, 6, and Lola, 5. The whole family had been hanging out earlier that weekend, doing the normal New York family activities (Broadway show, museum, shopping). But now that Sheen has checked himself into a hospital, and his antics (and porn-star companion) are making headlines, what is Richards telling the girls about their daddy?
Answer: absolutely nothing.
"I can't change what happened. All I can do is move forward, and keep my girls protected from the situation," Richards told Popeater on Wednesday. "I don't want them to know what happened."
The actress says she wants Sam and Lola to remember this weekend as "a fantastic trip in New York with Mommy and Daddy," with nothing unusual except that "Dad left early." Richards says she's just "grateful that they're still young enough to not know what's going on" -- meaning she can control their TV and internet viewing enough to shield them from the scandal.
Is Richards being naive in thinking she can protect her kids -- or is she just trying to be the best mother possible under really crappy circumstances? If Sheen continues in his unstable ways, Richards will be unable to shield her daughters for much longer -- and rather than hiding the truth, she'll need to find a way to make the truth less hurtful. We don't envy her that job.
Incidentally, the only reason Denise Richards is giving interviews is that she's on a promotional tour for her five-episode stint on the Spike TV show Blue Mountain State. Awkward timing, huh?
