Lindsay Lohan Loses 'Inferno' Role. Was She Fired?

Depending on who you ask, Lindsay Lohan has either quit or been fired from her next movie. For months, Lohan, 24, has been set to play the role of adult film star Linda Lovelace in the racy new biopic Inferno. She even posed for the posters back in May, wearing a curly wig and vintage underwear. From that month on, of course, Lohan's year went seriously downhill -- but throughout the court hearings, the jail time and the rehab stints, Inferno director Matthew Wilder swore up and down that his movie would remain on hold for Lindsay. Then on Saturday, the news broke that Lindsay Lohan had been replaced by Watchmen and 27 Dresses actress Malin Akerman. What the heck happened?

Director Wilder tells E! that she was fired, because "the impossibility of insuring her -- and some other issues -- have made it impossible for us to go forward." Other sources tell TMZ that Lindsay quit the project in order to focus on her recovery. Lohan's rep says that the decision was "mutual."

Whatever was behind the decision, getting dumped for a lesser-known actress doesn't make Lindsay look too good. However, we'd like to make a radical suggestion: passing on Inferno may be the best thing that ever happened to her. We've already expressed our concern that playing a troubled porn actress with a drug problem may not be the healthiest transitional gig for Lindsay. But we're not sure it would have helped her career, either. Think about it: even if she pulled off a brilliant performance as Lovelace, wouldn't audiences interpret her sleazy behavior and substance issues as an extension of Lindsay herself? In order to get her career back on track, Lindsay needs to re-invent herself. We're not sure what the New Lindsay will look like, but she would be wise to choose a debut role that's as far away from the tabloid headlines as she can get.

Another upside to letting Inferno go: Lohan can spend as much time as she needs at the Betty Ford Center, without feeling the pressure of an entire movie waiting on her release. If she's serious about sobriety, she needs to put her recovery first -- and trust that the right role will be waiting for her when she's good and ready.
